Gateway to East Gippsland
| Bairnsdale, the western gateway to the Lakes and
Wilderness region of East Gippsland, still retains the quiet country pace and fresh air
that you don't get in a bigger city. Not quite city, not quite country. On the banks of
the Mitchell River, Bairnsdale manages to retain a unique atmosphere as the commercial and
administrative hub of the region.
Bairnsdale's cultural, historical and exciting attractions
start in the centre of town. Here you can begin on the Arts Network Trail, visit nature
reserves, or revisit local history. Recreational facilities abound. Enjoy some of the best
fishing, golf, a game of bowls, visit our Aquatic and Recreational Centre or canoe, walk
or ride along the Mitchell. Try your luck on the pokies or flutter at the horse races.
View some magnificent scenery on a joy flight - or try the exhilaration of a parachute
jump. Bird-watch in the hides of the Macleod Morass boardwalk; a rare deep freshwater
marsh and sanctuary for over 130 species of water birds. The Bairnsdale and District Business and Tourism Association
welcomes you to Bairnsdale, gateway to our unique corner of the state. The Bairnsdale
Visitors Centre, next door to the famous St. Mary's Church, has an extensive range of
information to help you enjoy your visit. LOCATION Bairnsdale is situated along the banks of the magnificent
Mitchell River, 285 kms east of Melbourne on the Princes Highway. As the Gateway to the Gippsland Lakes, beaches and rivers, mountains, snow-fields
and Far-East Gippsland, Bairnsdale is an ideal base from which to explore the diverse
range of attractions available in this area.
